Our Story
There's a particular kind of quiet defeat that comes from walking through a gift shop and finding nothing that fits. You know the feeling, aisles of the same mass-produced trinkets, generic enough to work for anyone and meaningful to no one. So you turn to a religious bookstore instead, and everything there is plain, functional, built for utility rather than warmth, nothing that says I thought about you the way a real gift should.
For Nigeria's Muslim families, this gap runs even deeper. You want to celebrate a child's Aqiqah, an Eid morning, a nikaah blessed with dua, a graduation earned through years of quiet hard work and you want the gift to carry as much meaning as the moment itself. But the market rarely gives you both at once: beauty and meaning, faith and craft, something personal enough to actually keep.
“Maya Gifts & Co exists to close that gap. We make and curate gifts that carry intention — Islamic riddle cards that turn learning into play, quote keyholders that carry words worth remembering, journals for the thoughts too personal for a phone note, honey and black seed oil rooted in tradition, and everyday gifts chosen with the same care as the faith-inspired ones. Whether you're marking Eid or simply saying thank you, a gift from us is built to feel like it was made for exactly this moment, because it was.”
Maya's Story
I’m Sumayyah Adenle
Founder & Creative Director at Maya Gifts & Co.
It started with a wedding I almost showed up to empty-handed.
A friend was getting married, and I couldn't bring myself to buy the same thing everyone else would, another set of kitchen utensils, wrapped and handed over and forgotten by the next harmattan. I kept thinking about where that gift would be in five years. Ten. I wanted to give them something they'd still look at long after the plates had chipped and the guests had gone home. Something that would hold the memory of that day, not just mark it.
I searched. I found nothing.
Then I remembered a course I'd taken in Arabic calligraphy design, and the graphic design skills I'd been building on the side. Two things I'd never once thought to put together. So I sat down and did it, a couple-themed design, made just for them, made to be framed and hung where they'd see it every day.
That single piece became Maya Pixels and from there, hours spent designing, printing, framing calligraphy, turning blank sheets into things people wanted to hold onto forever. Requests came in for weddings, naming ceremonies, graduations. Then people started asking for more than frames: something small for a child at Eid, a keepsake for a friend, a gift that carried meaning without needing an occasion at all.
So Maya Gifts & Co grew out of that, not from a business plan, but from a very specific kind of frustration I suspect you've felt too: loving someone enough to want to give them something real, and not being able to find it anywhere. From a small store in Ibadan, we make and gather the things I once went looking for and couldn't find.
This is still just the beginning. But it's built on something that won't change: the belief that a gift should never be an afterthought.
